How to assign courseware

Hey, folks,

Let's see if we can find some different ways to ensure that students complete the courseware assessments (i.e. post tests) in COM100 classes. My initial idea was to make it part of the participation grade, but that's not necessarily the best way, especially for holding students accountable.

What might some other ways be?

What I did this semester was offer them extra credit points - catch was that in order to take part in extra credit all the assignments had to be passed in. Each quiz was worth a total of 1 point - so if they received .70, they received .7 extra credit. I had one class where almost the whole class took advantage of the opportunity and one where about 30 percent did. I had to use the quizzes from the bank as I needed to get the marks. If there is a way we can receive the interactive quiz marks back then I would definately use those!
Overall I think my students received between 5-7 extra credit points for this.

Actually, that's what I am referring too--the online assesements (i.e. the post-test included in each chapter on the courseware) which we must now make sure that students are completing. And, in fact, there is a very easy way to download the analytics/results from those assesements and you can find out how by going to "notes/analytics" in the COM100_Resources WebCT shell--it's under the course menu.

Would extra credit motivate the students to do it? I offered my students extra credit, (watch one of the MEF videos in the library and write a one page summary on it). Out of 42 students I've only gotten a small handful. I like the idea of making it part of their participation grade.
